Feeling unheard. One of the greatest pains. Desperate isolation. Feeling like the world is moving on without you. An illusion of sunshine and roses on the outside, when the inside is a raging chaos.

Ironic isn't it then, that we end up treating our inner child the exact same way. In an attempt to be heard and validated by others, we abandon ourselves. We lock away the child who desperately needs us to hear them. We deem them annoying, unprincipled, unhinged, unnecessary.

We chide ourselves for our fear. We push it down, explode with anger or shrink away, and then hide our shame. We are wholly unwilling to see that really, we just want to be seen, valued, accepted, safe. To play. To have space held for us. To be heard. To be honored.

It takes a lot of love and time to mourn not getting those things as a child. But the one person who can truly hear you now? And give you all those things?

It's you.

About the Artist

Dionne Ong is a mixed-race Asian Canadian artist whose work provokes and challenges her viewers' connection with nature, infinity, and self-love.

She has an 'every day' practice, most notably publishing 261 unique illustrations in 2021.

"It's so easy to see the magic in Mother Nature and animals, and deem them worthy of love. And yet, we struggle to allow ourselves to be worthy of love- despite being part of nature. The purpose of my work has always been to connect you to your magic."
